Anti-Malarial Medication Information

ANTI-MALARIAL MEDICATION

There are several different types of medication depending on such factors as area to be visited, length of stay, type of travel – holiday/business, your own medical history, drugs you may already be taking. Below is a very brief list of anti-malarial drugs, the cost and dosage.

MALARONE (Prescription only)

(Atovaquone 250mgm/Proguanil 100mgm)

Dose for Adults – ONE DAILY – preferably two days before travel, during and for seven days on return from malarious area. Take with food or milk at the same time each day. Not licenced for periods of use greater than 28 days or for people weighing less than 40 kgs Not recommended for use during pregnancy or if breast feeding.

MALARONE PAEDIATRIC TABLETS (Prescription only)

Each tablet contains Atovaquone 62.5mg/Proguinal 25mg

The dose is according to body weight and is shown below

Take one or two days before travelling, during and for seven days on return from malarious area. Malarone Paediatric tablets are not licenced for periods of use exceeding 28 days. They should be taken at the same time each day with food or a milky drink. The tablets can be crushed if necessary just before being taken and mixed with food. If your child is sick within one hour of taking the tablet a repeat dose should be given.

MEFLOQUINE 250mgm per tablet (Lariam) (Prescription only)

Dose for Adults – ONE WEEKLY – preferably two to three weeks before travel, during and for four weeks on return from malarious area. Not recommended in epilepsy or experiencing fits or seizures, psychiatric illness including depression if being treated. In the first three months of pregnancy or if breast feeding. If you are about to undertake tasks requiring precision such as scuba-diving, piloting a plane – due to dizziness that may be caused by mefloquine. CAN BE TAKEN FOR UP TO THREE YEARS

DOXYCYCLINE 100mgm (Prescription only)

Dose for Adults – ONE DAILY – At least two days ( seven days if not taken previously) before entering a malarious area, during and for four weeks on leaving Not recommended in pregnancy or if breast feeding For children under 12 years of age May sensitise the skin to sunlight and interfere with the metabolism of oral contraceptives. Extra contraceptive precautions should be taken for first three weeks of use. CAN BE TAKEN FOR UP TO TWO YEARS

CHLORQUINE Phosphate 250mgm per tablet (Avloclor) (does not require a prescription)

Dose – Two tablets weekly for age 13 years and over. Start one week before entering a malarious area, during and for four weeks on leaving. Not recommended in epilepsy or psoriasis Can be taken for periods exceeding five years.

PROGUANIL 100mg per tablet (Paludrine) (does not require a prescription)

Dose – Two tablets daily for age 13 years and over. Start one week before entering malarious area, during and for four weeks on leaving. Not recommended – in severe renal failure Safe in pregnancy but a folate supplement recommended Caution – in use if taking anti-coagulants – may alter dosage Can be taken for periods exceeding five years.

PROGUANIL PLUS CHLOROQUINE (Paludrine/Avloclor travel pack) (7 days supply) (does not require a prescription)

Dose – Take one week before entering malarious area, during and for four weeks on leaving. Each strip of tablets equals one week of medication and consists of two tablets of chloroquine and 14 tablets of proguanil in a calender pack for easy use. Cautions in use – as above for individual components i.e. Proguanil and Chloroquine. Can be taken for periods exceeding five years
