Malaria Risk Travel Information
You may need anti-malarial drugs for a stay in China depending on the areas you may visit or pass through. In the Yunnan Province and Hainan Island malaria poses a substantial risk. If visiting these areas you will need Mefloquine,Doxycycline or Malarone. In remote rural areas of China, Chloroquine (Avloclor) is the preferred anti-malarial. In main tourist areas there is very little risk: bite avoidance measures will suffice. Bite Avoidance Measures 1. Use mosquito nets impregnated with permethrin, an insecticide that kills mosquitoes instantly by acting on its central nervous system. During daytime, tie the net in a knot and leave it hanging from the ceiling. At bedtime untie the net and check carefully for hidden mosquitoes or any tears. Holes or tears must be mended with adhesive tape or thread. Tuck the edge of the net under the mattress and make sure there are no openings. 2. Use insecticides in the bedroom. Frequent spraying is necessary. It is important not to open the windows during spraying. Allow the vapour to settle before leaving the room. 3. Apply insect repellent to all exposed areas of skin, avoiding eyes and mouth. Also apply to clothing, reapplying frequently in accordance with the manufacturers directions. The use of DEET products is advised. 4. From sunset onwards, wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers. Light colours attract mosquitoes less than dark clothing. Aftershave and perfumes will tend to attract mosquitoes.
