Acetazolamide (Diamox) is a weak diuretic belonging to the group of drugs called carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Often used to treat glaucoma but also given occasionally on private prescription to prevent Altitude Sickness. Its ability to acidify the blood increases ventilation of the lungs which in turn helps prevent altitude sickness from developing.
Dosage often prescribed is 125mg to 250mg twice a day, or half to one tablet of Acetazolamide ( Diamox 250mg tablets ). This is usually given for one or two days before highest altitude is reached and continued for a further 3 days.
