Dexamethasone is a steroid drug ( glucocorticoid ) which may be given to treat the effects of acute mountain sickness. It should only be used in the hands of a suitably trained medical person and may reduce brain swelling and other symptoms which may develop at high altitude.

Dexamethasone in a dose of 4mg three times a day can be used to treat HACO ( High altitude cerebral oedema ) by reducing brain swelling, allowing valuable time for descent.

Dexamethasone can also be used to help prevent acute altitude sickness or AMS at a dose of 4mg three times a day for around 3 days, and is also a useful alternative to acetazolamide ( a sulphonamide ) for those who may react to sulphonamide type drugs. Taking along emergency supplies of both diamox and dexamethasone can be useful drugs at high altitude.
