Dexamethasone is a steroid drug ( glucocorticoid ) which may be given to treat the effects of acute mountain sickness. It should only be used in the hands of a suitably trained medical person and may reduce brain swelling and other symptoms which may develop at high altitude. |

For the traveller it may be prescribed in cases of protozoal infection, and is the drug of choice for acute invasive amoebic dysentry. |
