I Am Pregnant And Wish To Buy Proguanil Or Chloroquine For My Journey Am I Safe To Do So

I am pregnant and wish to buy proguanil or chloroquine for my journey, am I safe to do so?
Are anti malaria treatments safe if I am pregnant?
The answer to this is complicated and not entirely straightforward.
Firstly if you are pregnant you should think about whether your trip is essential? Malaria is very dangerous as a healthy adult, but it is even more dangerous for women who are pregnant and the unborn baby. Travelpharm advises all pregnant women to avoid all but essential travel to malaria risk areas.
If travel is unavoidable whilst pregnant then you should speak with your midwife and GP about your trip and contact Travelpharm directly for further advise. If travel is unavoidable then we may be in a position to help out.
Are there any licenced anti malaria treatments when I am pregnant?
All anti malaria tablets are unlicensed in pregnancy and this includes all the common prescription drugs like Malarone, Maloff Protect, Generic Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil) and Mefloquine as well as the over the counter products Chloroquine and Proguanil.
Any treatments that can be recommended are done on a one to one basis after a thorough consultation to ensure the risk vs benefits are fully explored, explained and discussed. Please ensure you contact Travelpharm by phone to discuss further.
Travelpharm will always advise customers who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding to delay or reconsider how essential their travel plans are.
