Malaria is a potentially fatal tropical disease that is spread from the bite of an infected female mosquito.

It is known to be one of the leading causes of preventable disease and death around the world, with over 200million new cases every year and over 627,000 deaths worldwide.

Malaria is currently found in more than 100 countries worldwide, with almost half of those being in Africa.

Travellers catch Malaria from mosquito bites that are infected with parasites called Plasmodium.

There are five different types of Plasmodium, which are falciparum, vivax, ovale, malariae and knowlesi. The most dangerous is Falciparum, however, any type of Plasmodium can cause serious illness.
