General
Are these tablets 100% effective?

In short No. No anti-malaria tablet is guaranteed to prevent malaria, but most are very effective if taken correctly. In addition, taking extra precautions like using insect repellents and sleeping under mosquito nets can reduce the risk even further of being infected with the malaria parasite and in combination with the anti malaria tablets you can reduce your risk even further.

For more advice follow this link to our bite avoidance page or check out our great range of insect repellents.

Where Should I use Anti-Malarial tablets?

Unfortunately, the global malaria picture changes rapidly and your risk will, therefore, vary as well. Here at Travelpharm, we use a wide variety of resources to help us make up to date and accurate decisions about suitability. Some of these resources include the FitForTravel website, TravelHealthPro and Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Please ensure you consult the latest guidance or contact Travelpharm on 01159 512092 for free advice.

Will I get side effects when taking malaria tablets?

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to know whether you will get side effects from any medicine until you have tried it.

Malaria medicines seem to have notoriety when it comes to side effects but here at Travelpharm we think that is unjust.

Whilst this should not serve as a personal recommendation, products like Malarone, Generic Malarone and Maloff Protect tend to be very well tolerated with upset stomachs being the most common complaint. Similar is true for Doxycycline as well, but 3% of people may suffer a reaction to sunlight (like sunburn).

Of all the antimalarial products we prescribe at Travelpharm Lariam (Mefloquine) has the worst reputation, but it is used successfully without side effects in many individuals and is a very important product for us to have available. For further information please call on 01159 512092

I am pregnant which antimalarial can I take?

This is a question you must take up with your own Doctor/Midwife. If pregnant, breastfeeding or hoping to start a family, and about to take antimalarials, it is vital that you discuss this fully with your GP before doing so.

Are you happy with this answer?

Travel to malaria risk areas whilst pregnant is not recommended for many reasons and advice to all would be mums is do not travel. If travel to a malaria zone is unavoidable then we must take precautions to ensure you do not contract malaria this includes mosquito nets and mosquito bite avoidance. All antimalarial medicines are unlicensed during pregnancy and breastfeeding so there needs to be a careful risk assessment carried out to ensure the risks are outweighed by the benefits.

Please call us on 0844 8221219 for further help or assistance as we may be in a position to help.
