What is the risk of malaria in South Africa?
The risk of Malaria is high in certain areas of South Africa. It is high in the low altitude areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga(bordering Mozambique and Zimbabwe) , including Kruger National Park. The transmisison season generally runs from September to May in this area. You will require prescription antimalarials in these areas.
Areas including North East KwaZulu-Natal and other north-west borders adjacent to the Molopo river and the Orange River are a lower risk with an emphasis on bite avoidance.
Because of the risk of malaria in areas of South Africa, antimalarials are advised if visiting these risk areas. Please remember to also follow the bite avoidance measures below.
