Cold Sores are are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. The infection causes small fluid filled blisters around the mouth or lips and it is very contagious.

The virus is passed from person to person through physical contact, for example kissing. It is really important for people with an active cold sore infection not to kiss others, especially babies as their immune system will not have fully developed. This could lead to a dangerous infection.

For most people a coldsore is a more of an annoyance than a major problem and the infection will usually heal on it own, but treatment with an anti-viral cream can speed things up and make your cold sore less contagious.

It is really important to start treating a cold sore as soon as possible so many patients will keep a spare tube so they can start treating the moment the feel the tingle. Whilst it is ok to treat the cold sore once it has broken out, prompt treatment as soon as the tingle starts can prevent the blisters forming.

Directions for use:

Suitable for adults and children

Apply a small amount of the cream five times a day to the affected area when you first feel the tingle, or as soon as you notice the infection.

You can continue using this cream for up to 10 days

If the cold sore has not healed within 10days you should speak with your doctor

Not for use on the gentials, eyes or inside the mouth. Please see you GP if affected in this way

Side Effects

Most patients will not suffer side effects when using this medicine but you may possibly experience the following uncommon side effects:

• Transient burning or stinging following application of aciclovir cream
• Mild drying or flaking of the skin
• Itching
