Periactin tablets work by reducing the symptoms that are associated with an allergy.

These tablets will help with the symptoms of runny or blocked nose, sneezing, and itchy or watery eyes.

Periactin is also used to relieve the itchiness associated with some skin problems, such as rash, hives, dermatitis, eczema, mild reactions to insect bites and chickenpox.

What causes hay fever?

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen, typically when it comes into contact with your mouth, nose, eyes and throat.

Some symptoms are:

  • Sneezing and coughing.
  • A runny or blocked nose.
  • Itchy, red or watery eyes.
  • Itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears.
  • Headache.
  • Feeling tired.

Can Periactin be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Do not take Periactin if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

Directions for use:

Children aged 2-6 years: take ½ a tablet 2 – 3 times a day, with an extra dose at bedtime if needed. Do not give more than 3 tablets a day.

Children aged 7-14 years: 1 tablet 2 – 3 times a day, with an extra dose can be taken at bedtime if needed. Do not exceed more than 4 tablets a day.

Adults and children over 14 years: start with 1 tablet 3 times a day, increasing to 4 if needed. Do not taken more than 8 tablets a day.

Who is it not suitable for?

Do not take Periactin if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients listed below.
  • If you are taking a medicine called Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors for depression.
  • You have a narrowing of the opening from the stomach.
  • You have glaucoma.
  • You are elderly and not very mobile.
  • You have problems passing urine.
  • You have a stomach ulcer.

Contains:

Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride, Maize (Corn) Starch, Pregelatinised Maize (Corn) Starch, Calcium Phosphate, Lactose, Magnesium Stearate.

Side effects

Stop taking Periactin and tell your doctor straight away, if you notice any of the following serious side effects.

  • Allergic skin rash and hives.
  • Severe allergic reaction which causes difficulty in breathing or dizziness.

Caution:

Do not give to children under the age of 2.

Do not take if you are allergic to Periactin or any of the other ingredients listed in this medicine.

Keep out of sight and reach of children.
