What are Sodium Cromoglicate Allergy Eye Drops?

You maybe forgiven for thinking that they are an antihistamine eye drop as they help manage the symptoms of allergies affecting the eye like:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Soreness
  • Watering
  • Puffy eyes

You would be wrong though, as these eye drops are actually a mast cell stabiliser. What's a mast cell stabiliser I hear you say? This useful class of drug rather than preventing the action of histamine (an antihistamine) work to prevent the release of histamine from mast cells. By stabilising the mast cell membrane you prevent histamine release. This means that to get the most from this type of treatment you must use the medicine on a regular basis even when you do not have symptoms. A great choice for those who suffer for several weeks or months at a time.

Typically, these symptoms occur in the late Spring or early Summer when pollen from grasses or trees comes into contact with the eyes of people who are sensitive to them. This condition is sometimes called 'hay fever eyes' or by its medical term: seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Some unfortunate individuals will suffer this condition year round and not just in the summer. This is known as Perennial Allergic Conjunctivitis.
