Acetazolamide 250mg Tablets (Diamox), are a weak diuretic, often used for the prevention of altitude sickness.

Often used to treat glaucoma but also used to prevent Altitude Sickness. Its ability to acidify the blood increases ventilation of the lungs which in turn helps prevent altitude sickness from developing.

This medicine is being used "off-label". This means that it is not being used for its licenced indication (Glaucoma). It is however commonly prescribed for altitude sickness prevention.

The usual dose is half to one tablet twice daily, (125mg-250mg twice daily). This is usually started one to two days before ascent and until you have reached your highest point or are suitably acclimatised. They can be ordered either by using our Online Consultation Service (Consultation - Altitiude sickness) or by sending in a private prescription that you may have obtained from your GP (I Have a Prescription).

Each tablet contains 250mg acetazolamide. Also contains dicalcium phosphate, corn starch, magnesium stearate, sodium starch glycolate, povidone.

Do not take Acetazolamide tablets if you know you are allergic to sulphonamides, sulphonamide derivatives including acetazolamide or to any of the ingredients in the medicine. Avoid these tablets if you have severe liver problems, or have ever had severe liver problems, or if you have a particular type of glaucoma known as chronic non congestive angle closure glaucoma, or if you have reduced function of the adrenal glands, or if you have low blood levels of sodium and/or potassium or high blood levels of chlorine.
