What does this medicine do?

Atovaquone/Proguanil, more commonly known as generic Malarone is an anti-malaria drug that will help prevent malaria infection in patients who are travelling to areas of the world where malaria is a problem.
Typically this includes South America, parts of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
This medicine is one of the most effective antimalarials available, but no anti-malaria medicine is 100% effective, and so you should avoid insect bites by using an appropriate insect repellent.

My doctor has already written me a prescription for Malarone

If you want to send the prescription to us in the post then please increase the quantity box to the amount shown on your prescription and click "I Have a Prescription". You will need to post the original prescription to us before we can ship your order. To speed things up you could use our online consultation option.

Please note that doctors often write prescriptions for the brand Malarone. Whilst Malarone and Atovaquone/Proguanil contain the same active ingredients, Malarone is a brand. Unfortunately, UK law prevents a pharmacy from substituting an unbranded product where a brand has been specified by the prescriber. So if your prescriptions state Malarone you will need to buy Malarone, get the prescription changed or simply fill out our online consultation and let our specialist write your prescription.

General
Should I buy branded or unbranded Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil)?

The choice is yours. As a private patient purchasing medicine price tends to be a major factor, many patients opt for unbranded products.

So why do some people still buy brands?  In most scenarios it is familiarity.  We are all familiar with brands and the images these brands portray actively persuade us that their product is premium and better than their competitors.

Considering both brands and generics their should be no difference in clinical effectiveness between these medicines, and usually upon trying generic medicines patients are happy with their treatment.  People feel reassured by brands and often require reassurance that the cheaper product is in fact as good.

Is Malarone or Malarone Alternatives only available on prescription?

Malarone is a brand owned by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and has a Prescription Only licence. Generic Malarone contains the same ingredients (Atovaquone/Proguanil) as Malarone but is manufactured by someone else. Usually, these are prescription only also. In 2017 Glenmark launched a non-prescription product called Maloff Protect. You do not require a prescription to buy Maloff Protect.

The prescription status should be of no concern if purchasing through Travelpharm as we offer a FREE online consultation for our prescription-only products like Malarone, which means that you do not need to go see your doctor first.

Are these tablets 100% effective?

In short No. No anti-malaria tablet is guaranteed to prevent malaria, but most are very effective if taken correctly. In addition, taking extra precautions like using insect repellents and sleeping under mosquito nets can reduce the risk even further of being infected with the malaria parasite and in combination with the anti malaria tablets you can reduce your risk even further.

For more advice follow this link to our bite avoidance page or check out our great range of insect repellents.

How do I take Malarone or generic Malarone tablets?

The dose for Malarone or Generic Malarone is one tablet daily, starting ONE to TWO days before arrival in the malaria country, EVERYDAY whilst there and for SEVEN days upon leaving. For example, if you are going on a 7 day trip you would need 16 tablets (2 before, 7 whilst there and 7 on return) per person.

Where Should I use Anti-Malarial tablets?

Unfortunately, the global malaria picture changes rapidly and your risk will, therefore, vary as well. Here at Travelpharm, we use a wide variety of resources to help us make up to date and accurate decisions about suitability. Some of these resources include the FitForTravel website, TravelHealthPro and Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Please ensure you consult the latest guidance or contact Travelpharm on 01159 512092 for free advice.

Will I get side effects when taking malaria tablets?

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to know whether you will get side effects from any medicine until you have tried it.

Malaria medicines seem to have notoriety when it comes to side effects but here at Travelpharm we think that is unjust.

Whilst this should not serve as a personal recommendation, products like Malarone, Generic Malarone and Maloff Protect tend to be very well tolerated with upset stomachs being the most common complaint. Similar is true for Doxycycline as well, but 3% of people may suffer a reaction to sunlight (like sunburn).

Of all the antimalarial products we prescribe at Travelpharm Lariam (Mefloquine) has the worst reputation, but it is used successfully without side effects in many individuals and is a very important product for us to have available. For further information please call on 01159 512092

I am pregnant which antimalarial can I take?

This is a question you must take up with your own Doctor/Midwife. If pregnant, breastfeeding or hoping to start a family, and about to take antimalarials, it is vital that you discuss this fully with your GP before doing so.

Are you happy with this answer?

Travel to malaria risk areas whilst pregnant is not recommended for many reasons and advice to all would be mums is do not travel. If travel to a malaria zone is unavoidable then we must take precautions to ensure you do not contract malaria this includes mosquito nets and mosquito bite avoidance. All antimalarial medicines are unlicensed during pregnancy and breastfeeding so there needs to be a careful risk assessment carried out to ensure the risks are outweighed by the benefits.

Please call us on 0844 8221219 for further help or assistance as we may be in a position to help.

How do anti malaria drugs containing Atovaquone and Proguanil work?

Atovaquone and Proguanil are the active ingredients found in Malarone, Maloff Protect and generic Malarone.

This class of anti-malaria drugs are known as Causal antimalarials.  These tablets work by actively targetting the malaria parasite whilst it is attempting to multiply in the liver.  This is very early on in the lifecycle of the parasite after being bitten by an infected mosquito and because of this you need only take the tablets for seven days on leaving the region.

Other antimalarials like doxycycline and the quinine derivatives like chloroquine and mefloquine are suppressive treatments.  These work by preventing damage to the red blood cells after the parasite has already multiplied in the liver.  This occurs much later in the malaria parasites lifecycle and because of this, the drugs must be taken for much longer after leaving the malaria area.  Usually, this is 4 weeks after leaving.
