Should I buy branded or unbranded Malarone?

The choice is yours.  As a private patient purchasing medicine price tends to be a major factor, many patients opt for unbranded products.

So why do some people still buy brands?  In most scenarios it is familiarity.  We are all familiar with brands and the images these brands portray actively persuade us that their product is premium and better than their competitors.

Clinical effectiveness should be no different between branded and generic medicines and usually upon trying generic medicines patients are happy with their treatment.  People feel reassured by brands and often require reassurance that the cheaper product is in fact as good.

Is Malarone only available on prescription?

Malarone is a brand owned by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and has a Prescription Only licence.  Generic Malarone contains the same ingredients (Atovaquone/Proguanil) as Malarone but is manufactured by someone else.  Usually these are prescription only also.  In 2017 Glenmark launched a non-prescription product called Maloff Protect.  You do not require a prescription to buy Maloff Protect.

The prescription status should be of no concern if purchasing through Travelpharm as we offer a FREE online consultation for our prescription only products like Malarone, which means that you do not need to go see your doctor first.

Are these tablets 100% effective?

In short No.  No anti malaria tablet is guaranteed to prevent malaria, but most are very effective if taken correctly.  In addition taking extra precautions in combination with the anti malaria tablets you can reduce your risk even further.  For advice follow this link to our bite avoidance page or check out our great range of insect repellents.

How do I take Malarone / generic Malarone

Malarone or Generic Malarone is taken daily, starting ONE to TWO days before arrival in the malaria country, EVERYDAY whilst there and for SEVEN days upon leaving.  For example, if you are going on a 7 day trip you would need 16 tablets (2 before, 7 whilst there and 7 on return) per person.

Where Should I use Anti-Malarial tablets?

Unfortunately the global malaria picture changes rapidly and your risk will therefore vary as well.  Here at Travelpharm we use a wide variety of resources to help us make up to date and accurate decisions about suitability.  Some of these resources include FitForTravel, TravelHealthPro and Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Please ensure you consult the latest guidance or contact Travelpharm on 01159 512092 for free advice.

Will I get side effects

Unfortunately it is very difficult to know whether you will get side effects from any medicine until you have tried it.

Malaria medicines seem to have a notoriety when it comes to side effects but here at Travelpharm we think that is unjust.  Whilst this should not serve as a personal recommendation products like Malarone, Generic Malarone and Maloff tend to be very well tolerated with upset stomachs being the most common complaint.  Similar is true for Doxyxcline as well, but 3% of people may suffer a reaction to sunlight (like sunburn).  Of all the antimalarial products we prescribe at Travelpharm Lariam (Mefloquine) has the worst reputation, but it is used successfully without side effects in many individuals and is a very important product for us to have available.  For further information please call on 01159 512092

I am pregnant which antimalarial can I take?

This is a question you must take up with your own Doctor/Midwife. If pregnant, breastfeeding or hoping to start a family, and about to take antimalarials, it is vital that you discuss this fully with your GP before doing so.

Are you happy with this answer?

Travel to malaria risk zones whilst pregnant is not recommended for many reasons and advice to all would be mums is do not travel.  If travel to a malaria zone is unavoidable then we must take precautions to ensure you do not contract malaria.  All antimalarial medicines are unlicensed during pregnancy and breastfeeding so there needs to be a careful risk assessment carried out to ensure the risks are outweighed by the benefits.

Please call us on 0844 8221219 for further help or assistance as we may be in a position to help.
