Introduction

Are your hay fever and allergy symptoms getting you down? Does it feel like you have tried every hay fever treatment, and nothing seems to work? You aren’t alone. For some people, the stubborn symptoms of hay fever and other allergies can have a profound effect on daily life and finding the most appropriate treatment can sometimes be trial and error. We sell online a wide range of prescription allergy eye drops like Optilast, allergy tablets like Fexofenadine and nasal sprays such as Dymista and Avamys to help ease and manage your symptoms.

What is Hay Fever?

Hay fever occurs because of an allergic reaction to pollen, typically grass pollen, but there are other types like Tree and Weed pollens. When tiny pollen particles come into contact with your mouth, eyes or throat, your body suffers an allergic reaction causing the classic symptoms of hay fever; runny nose, sneezing, lethargy and red watery itchy eyes.

What Causes Hay Fever?

The pollen that causes hay fever will vary from one person to another and also depend on geographical location. The amount of pollen that is in the air will have a direct effect on how bad your hay fever symptoms will be.

If the weather is hot & dry then it is more likely there will be more pollen in the air, if it is a cool day with rain & dampness, then the amount of pollen in the air will be reduced.  Oddly enough it can be the cooler wetter days that make your hay fever worse, this is because the rain brings the pollen down to ground level rather than high in the atmosphere.

During the pollen season, plants release pollen early in the morning, as the day gets warmer the pollen levels rise and on sunny days the pollen count is usually the highest in the early evening.

What can you do to prevent Hay Fever?

We are often asked, What is the best medicine for hay fever?  This is a tricky question to answer as the answer is different for everyone but stopping hay fever is usually trial and error.  Sometimes an antihistamine alone won't work, but if you add an allergy nasal spray, or eye drops you might find you get better control.  If you are struggling to make your mind up or have questions give one of our team a call.

Want to control your hayfever without medication, then follow these top tips for a more enjoyable Summer:

  1. Avoiding exposure to pollen or the allergen causing your symptoms is the most effective way to control symptoms. However, exposure is sometimes unavoidable
  2. If you suffer from hay fever then wearing wraparound sunglasses when outdoors to stop pollen from getting into your eyes
  3. Take a shower and change your clothes after being outdoors
  4. Apply a small amount of Vaseline to your nostrils, this can trap pollen before it goes up your nose
  5. Use a nasal spray containing saline like Sterimar to flush allergens out of the nasal passage
  6. Stay indoors when the pollen count is at its highest. Avoid mowing lawns or sitting in fields that have freshly cut grass
  7. Try to wash your hands & face regularly during peak times.
  8. Avoid exposure to other allergens such as pet fur, sprays or cigarette smoke

For many people, these measures alone are not sufficient and the use of hay fever drugs and corticosteroid nasal sprays are essential.

The good news is we are a fully registered UK pharmacy and we offer both over the counter and prescription-strength allergy medications that could help you to dramatically improve your allergy symptoms. Try our simple online consultation today.

What are the symptoms of Hay Fever?

Hay fever affects one in five people in the UK; with the most common cause being grass pollen. Hay fever is an allergy that occurs when your body makes antibodies in response to certain triggers, in this case, pollen. The most common symptoms to look out for are:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes
  • Stuffy nose
  • Itchy throat, mouth or ears
  • Coughing
  • Headache
  • Earache
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • If you also have asthma, these symptoms could also worsen, and you may suffer from a tight chest, shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing.

There is currently no cure for hay fever or allergy, but often symptoms can be relieved with treatment with or without medication.

What are the different Hay Fever seasons?

There are many different types of pollen, therefore depending on what type of pollen you are allergic to will depend on what time of year your symptoms will occur. Different trees and plants produce pollen at different times of the year, in the UK the pollen count season is separated into 3 seasons:

Tree Pollen – late March - mid-May
Grass Pollen – mid-May - July
Weed Pollen – June – September
