How effective is the morning after pill?

The effectiveness of both licensed morning after pills, Levonelle and EllaOne will vary depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle.  It is also important to take the morning after pill as soon as you can, time is of the essence and delays can reduce the effectiveness.

In general EllaOne (Ulipristal Acetate) is more effective than Levonelle (Levonorgestrel), but neither is as effective as regular hormonal contraception (combined pills, mini pills, depo-injection or the implant), barrier methods like condoms or in an emergency a copper coil.

Is the morning after pill free?

Unfortunately when purchased online at Peak Pharmacy the morning after pill is not free but we do ensure our prices are always fair and accessible.

In some areas of the country, the NHS will fund Sexual health services at your local community pharmacy, so it's worth enquiring whether this occurs in your area.  

If it is not available for free then most community pharmacies will have the tablet available to buy over the counter after a quick confidential discussion with the pharmacist.

 

How does the morning after pill work?

It's important to understand that morning after pills will only work to prevent a pregnancy if you are not already pregnant.  Both EllaOne and Levonelle work by preventing you from releasing an egg from your ovaries (ovulation) with EllaOne demonstrating better results than Levonelle.  

Sperm can live in the genital tract for about 5 days, if ovulation occurs during this time pregnancy may occur.  When taking a morning after pill ovulation is usually delayed by approximately 5 days which allows plenty of time fopr the sperm to become unviable. 

 

Can the morning after pill delay your period?

The morning after pill will upset your menstrual cycle.  Women frequently report unusual bleeding after taking the tablet and ovulation may be postponed, delaying your next true period. 

If your next period is delayed and it is more than 5 days late then please do a pregnancy test.  Pregnancy tests are usually accurate 2-3 weeks after sexual intercourse.

How long after unprotected sex can you take the morning after pill?

The morning after pill is always best taken sooner rather than later, preferably within 24 hours.  The sooner you take it the more effective it will be.

Levonelle, containing levonorgestrel can be taken up to 3 days (72 hours) after intercourse.

EllaOne, containing Ulipristal Acetate can be taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after intercourse.
