Sildenafil tablets belong to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase inhibitors. Not heard of Sildenafil before? Well, it’s the drug that is in the brand Viagra. Sildenafil tablets are designed to treat men that are suffering from Erectile Dysfunction or male impotence. For short, we sometimes call it “ED”.
“Erectile Dysfunction is where a man struggles to obtain or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual performance.”
I've heard of generic Viagra, what is it? Well, generic Viagra is just another name for Sildenafil.
Sildenafil is aimed at men 18 years and over and who are suffering from erectile dysfunction. If you do not have erectile dysfunction Sildenafil is not for you. Sildenafil will not help you:
Sildenafil comes in 3 strengths. Sildenafil 50mg, 100mg and a 25mg strengths. The usual dose is one tablet approximately 30-60 minutes before anticipated sex. It is best taken on an empty stomach as a heavy meal may delay the onset of action. One tablet will usually work for up to 4-6 hours after taking a dose.
The starting dose is usually Sildenafil 50mg but depending on the outcome. Sometimes 100mg of sildenafil may be required if the erection achieved was not satisfactory and if side effects were a problem at 50mg then 25mg is usually used. It is important to realise that as dose increases, the risk of side effects also increases and so its about getting the right dose to obtain and maintain a sufficient erection without the side effects. Taking a bigger dose won’t speed up the onset of action.
In order to obtain a suitable erection for sex blood must flow into the penis. This normally happens when you are aroused. If you are suffering from erectile dysfunction this may not happen and so you may not get an erection that lasts long enough or is hard enough for penetrating sex. This tablet works by helping relax the blood vessels in your penis which in turn allows the blood to flow easier. This means you may get a longer-lasting, harder erection.
Sildenafil is safe to take daily if required but we would only recommend one dose per day, a maximum of 100mg. If you need to use Sildenafil every day then you might want to read about Tadalafil 5mg tablets.
Most users of Sildenafil who suffer from ED will report improvements in their sexual performance but not every time. Typically 60-70% of men will see improvements. ED is linked to several problems and they are not all physiological. Sometimes the problem could be sure to medication and sometimes because of psychological factors. Sildenafil is usually the first treatment patients try.
Sometimes a change to the dose may be required. After a quick discussion with our pharmacist, we would be able to recommend alternatives or a change to dose if appropriate.
Typically Sildenafil is associated with the following side effects:
Headaches
Flushing
Block Nose
Indigestion
Back Pain
These side effects tend to occur in more than 1 in 100 patients. For further information have a read of the Sildenafil patient information leaflet which shows some of the rarer side effects that may occur.
This is a well-known problem. Do not take nitrates and Sildenafil together. According to the manufacturers of Sildenafil, nitrates and sildenafil are contraindicated. Common examples of nitrates which are typically used to treat angina include Isosorbide Mononitrate, Nicorandil and Glyceryl Trinitrate. Some recreational drugs like poppers also contain nitrates, for example, amyl nitrate, known as “Poppers”. Our pharmacist cannot prescribe Sildenafil for a patient using nitrates.
Alpha-blockers are a family of drugs used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and an enlarged prostate, which is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH for short. Whilst these drugs can be taken together we would always advise use with caution. It is well known that when alpha-blockers and sildenafil are used together a significant drop in blood pressure can occur which may make you feel very dizzy and potentially off-balance. It is for this reason that Travelpharm feels you should speak with your GP about using Sildenafil and an alpha-blocker together.
Men under the age of 18 years of age or women of any age.
Sildenafil should not be used by patients who are allergic to Sildenafil or similar drugs due to the risk of an allergic reaction.
As discussed previously using Sildenafil with nitrates is contraindicated and use in patients who sex who be unadvisable by their doctor should also avoid use. Typically these patients will suffer from severe cardiac problems or unstable angina.
Sildenafil is contraindicated in patients who have a loss of vision in one eye because of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), regardless of whether this episode was in connection or not with previous PDE5 inhibitor exposure.
The safety of sildenafil has not been studied in the following sub-groups of patients and therefore our pharmacist cannot prescribe for patients with severe hepatic impairment, hypotension (blood pressure <90/50 mmHg), the recent history of stroke or myocardial infarction and known hereditary degenerative retinal disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa.
We think our prices are some of the best found at any UK online pharmacy and Sildenafil from us is perhaps the most affordable treatment option available. You will see the price is a lot cheaper than the branded equivalent Viagra, or Viagra Connect. This is because the patent owned by Pfizer for this drug expired in 2013, meaning anyone could manufacturer this ED treatment. Just because the product is cheaper, it doesn’t mean it’s any less effective or of worse quality. If you’re interested we have a great article on the differences between branded medicines and unbranded medicines (generics) which you might be interested to have a read about. Most importantly, all medicines supplied by Travelpharm are approved by the MHRA and are licenced for the conditions we are treating.

Sometimes Sildenafil may not be the right treatment for you to treat your ED. Don’t worry there are other medicines you could try. These include:
Tadalafil, also known as Cialis which has a long duration of action.
Vardenafil, also known as Levitra
Avanafil, also known as Spedra which is known to be good for those who suffer ED due to diabetes type 1 or type 2.
If treatment with medicine is not appropriate then you may want to consider a mechanical aid, like a “penis pump” which is a device to draw blood into your penis.
Yes – absolutely. Travelpharm is a regulated online UK pharmacy employing registered UK pharmacists, UK prescribers and UK dispensers for our pharmacy. With registrations at the GPhC, the MHRA and with LOTS of 5* Trustpilot reviews dating back to 2013 you can see we have been around for some time.
